My goal in our family is to have as minimal waste as possible. Is that always obtainable? Not always, but thank you God for compost piles and chickens to take care of the rest.
I first learned about using remnants from the animal 3 years ago while in the beginning of my homesteading journey. I only used them to make bone broth, missing out on the opportunity for an extra meal.
About 2 years ago that all changed, and the Beef Broth Regimen became what it is today.
WHAT IS THE BEEF BROTH REGIMEN?
The beef broth regimen is a method I came up with for my family for meals during our busy weeks.
I used to have a full-time job on top of a full-time farm and being a full-time wife and then a full-time mother. So if you didn’t catch on, I was very busy! And I still am to be honest, but thankfully have become a SAHM since then.
With going through that busy season though, I still wanted to cook from scratch and provide the best food for my family. I needed something that I could make quick, easy, and little steps during those times: The Beef Broth Regimen.
This regimen is 4 days worth of food using 2 major ingredients and a few minor ingredients to add to it for flavor and substance.

WHERE DID YOU LEARN ABOUT REMNANTS?
When I first got started in making my own bone broth, I bought 20 pounds worth from a local farm. I’ll never forget that the cardboard box was labeled “Ralph’s Dog Bones.” Most butchers label remnants as “soup bones” or “dog bones.”
I thought to myself should I even be consuming this? Are these really for dogs? Nevertheless, yes, you can feed them to your dogs, but you would be missing out on a whole lot of nutrition.
I started researching more on these bones because simply if they were part of the animal that I am already eating I should be able to consume them in some way, right? I started to research more into this and found out a whole bunch of good, delicious information.
WHAT ARE REMNANTS?
Remnants are the part of an animal that many people don’t think to consume or eat the meat off of. They are the parts of the animal including the legs, arms, and neck.
The meat around these areas is known to be more tough, therefore it’s not something listed as a delicacy in a restaurant. It is not a sought after meal, but I promise it is better than you think, especially with this recipe.
The best way to have the meat is to not cook it fully to help keep it tender, but if you choose to cook it well done that is fine too.
HOW MUCH BONE BROTH DOES THIS RECIPE MAKE?
It can make between a half gallon to a whole gallon depending upon what kitchen gadget you use to make the bone broth.
WHAT DO YOU USE TO MAKE BONE BROTH?
You can use a CrockPot, Instant Pot, or large pot on the stove.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE BONE BROTH?
For the CrockPot, it will take up to 12 hours to make. This is my favorite way to make the bone broth since it really takes the time to extract the collagen, vitamins and minerals, and protein.
With the InstantPot, you can make it between 2-24 hours. With this, you can cook the bone broth on the setting “Soup” for 2-4 hours and then let it stay on “Warm” for up to 24 hours.
If you use a large pot you will keep it on the stove for up to 12 hours. If you do this I recommend staying home while it cooks since you will have to keep an active burner going for that time. This is my least favorite way to do it because of time and safety.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BONE BROTH?
- There is collagen that is extracted from the bones in bone broth. Collagen helps improve skin by tightening and lifting the skin, reducing wrinkles – woohoo! It also helps with strengthening bones, thickening hair (and yes I can attest to this!), stronger nails, building a stronger heart, and SO MUCH MORE! I love incorporating bone broth whenever I can into my diet to bring more collagen into my life.
- It provides nutrients like fat, protein, and carbohydrates along with potassium, phosphorous, calcium, and magnesium.
- It is low on the caloric scale so you can add it to many meals!
- Helps support joint health and immune system.
- And you can make so many different dishes with bone broth adding lots of nourishment to your meals!

Parchment Paper
INGREDIENTS YOU WILL NEED FOR REMNANTS
Leg, Arm, or Neck Remnants of lamb, pig, beef, or deer
Half of Large Onion
Garlic Powder
Thyme (Optional)
HOW TO ROAST REMNANTS IN THE OVEN
- Turn oven onto 425 degrees.
- Take a large sheet pan and lay a piece of parchment paper down. Spread 1 tbsp of olive oil onto the parchment paper.
- Place the remnants onto the pan. Sprinkle as much sea salt as you prefer on top of the meat parts.
- Sprinkle the garlic powder all over the meat part as well, more than 1 tbsp if you would like.
- Slice 1/4 of a whole onion. Lay the onion on top of the remnants for the meat to really suck up the onion flavor.
- Once the onion is heated, cook for about 30-35 minutes or until the meat is cooked at the temperature you prefer for beef. Well done is 145 degrees.
- After cooked to your preference, serve the meat parts.
- Keep the fat and beef bones for the bone broth.
Roasted Remnants
Ingredients
- 1 package Bones about 2-3
- 3 tbsp Olive Oil
- 2 pinches Sea Salt
- 1 tbsp Garlic Powder
- 1/4 whole Onion sliced
Instructions
- Turn oven on 425 degrees.
